Lights out.

I know, I sometimes come off as a bit of a pessimist, cynic, and general malcontent. However, there is one thing that never fails to make me behave like a little girl and talk in that horrible cooing baby voice (Hint: It’s not babies).
Fuzzy, adorable animals. Especially fuzzy baby animals. It’s just something I can’t control.
And when I need my fuzzy little animal fix I head to the Woodland Park Zoo. I know some people have a bad image of zoos. They imagine unhealthy animals in tiny cages performing for the amusement of the masses. I, on the other hand am talking about modern, reputable zoos, not like that sketchy one in Gaza that painted a donkey to look like a zebra. These zoos are important for the survival of endangered species and education. People are more likely to get involved in helping animals if they feel a connection to them.
The Woodland Park Zoo has been hit by hard times just like so many other places, and unfortunately they are closing my favorite exhibit. On March 1st they will be closing the Night Exhibit, the home to the zoo’s nocturnal animals. That means vampire bats Bruce, Vlad and Edward (I made those names up) will have to find new homes. It is one of the more expensive exhibits to run, and the animals are relatively easy to move.
I urge you to find a time in February to go check out how I spent many a break when I worked at the zoo. It really is a unique experience and really worth your time. My favorites are the Grey-headed flying foxes. And I know if you go you are just going to breeze by the educational stuff at the beginning , but you really should hang out for a bit and give your eyes time to adjust. I have done both and you really can see more if you take your time. Lastly, if you feel charitable, think about making a donation.
And if none of that made you even think about going to the zoo, what about this, this or this? (the last one is my favorite)

I still regret not going when we lived a block away! No excuses. I’ll try to get over there before March, thanks for the heads up. That’s really too bad…
